Half of all D&D campaigns start in a tavern, and the room only feels real when your players can hear it. A good tavern ambience fills the silence between lines of dialogue: low crowd murmur, a fire popping in the hearth, mugs set down a little too hard, and a bard who never quite finishes the song.
This page plays a looping medieval tavern soundscape you can leave running for the whole scene. It is built from the same layers you get in the My Moods app, so if you want the room louder, quieter, busier or more musical, you can open the app and adjust each layer on its own.
Use it for the classic inn where the party meets, a rowdy dockside alehouse, or a quiet roadside rest stop late at night. Keep the volume low enough that nobody has to raise their voice. The goal is atmosphere, not a soundtrack your players have to talk over.
What you hear in this tavern ambience
Tavern crowd
Steady conversation with the odd burst of laughter
Fireplace
Close crackle and pops from the hearth
Glass and mug clinks
Occasional one-shots, so it never sounds like a loop
Celtic band
Lively folk music playing in the corner
Medieval music
Swap in a calmer medieval track for quiet evenings
How to use it at your table
Fade it down when the quest giver talks
Lower the crowd layer when an NPC leans in to share a secret. Your players will lean in too.
Trigger a crowd reaction
Fire a cheer or a crowd gasp as a one-shot when someone wins an arm-wrestling match or a fight breaks out.
Switch scenes without a hard cut
My Moods crossfades between scenes, so you can move from the tavern to the night street outside without stopping the audio.
Tavern ambience FAQ
Is this tavern ambience free to use in my D&D game?
Yes. You can play it in your home game or at a public table for free. The My Moods app is also free to download if you want to mix the layers yourself.
Can I make the tavern busier or quieter?
In the app every layer has its own volume slider, so you can turn the crowd up for a packed festival night or down to a few regulars by the fire.
Does it work offline?
The app works offline once installed, which helps if you play in a basement or at a convention with bad Wi-Fi.
